Retro-Replay #4: Bubble Tape! From 1991!
Ahh, Bubble Tape. Is there any greater symbol of preteen rebellion than a plastic container full of paper-thin chewing gum? Apparently not. The Hubba Bubba product that's "for you, not them" hit store shelves in 1991 and quickly became a bestseller, thanks in part to a visually arresting ad campaign that painted Bubble Tape not only as a tasty counterpart to regular gum, but a bonafide status symbol. Were you cool enough to enjoy Bubble Tape?
There's really nothing innately special about this stuff. After all, it is just the same old gum we've always had -- six feet of it -- packaged in a small, puck-sized plastic dispenser. The marketing really makes the product in this case. The above commercial is more entertaining than it has any right to be, and with its bright, off-the-wall imagery and wailing electric guitar, it surely ranks as one of the most memorable ad campaigns of the early '90s.
